How to rename your Huawei Olt ?

Applies to: MA5600T, MA5603T, MA5608T, MA5616, MA5680T, MA5683T, MA5800 series.

Renaming your Huawei OLT changes its sysname — the label shown in the CLI prompt and in your network management system (NMS/EMS). This is useful when you’re standardizing hostnames across sites, or replacing a generic factory name with something that identifies the location or role of the OLT.

1. Log In and Enter Configuration Mode

Connect via Telnet, SSH, or console with the root/admin user, then enter configuration mode:

enable
config

2. Set the New System Name

Use the sysname command followed by the name you want:

sysname Madan_KC

The prompt updates immediately after you press Enter — you’ll see it switch from the old name to the new one:

Huawei_OLT(config)#sysname Madan_KC
Madan_KC(config)#

3. Save the Configuration

The rename takes effect in the running config right away, but you still need to save it so it survives a reboot:

save

Naming Tips

Avoid spaces — use underscores or hyphens instead (e.g. Dulegauda_OLT1, not Dulegauda OLT1).
Keep a consistent naming convention across sites — for example Location_Model_Number — so your NMS dashboard stays easy to scan as you add more OLTs.
Avoid renaming a live production OLT during peak hours if it’s actively monitored by an NMS that keys alerts off the hostname — some monitoring tools flag a name change as a new/unknown device until synced.

FAQ

Does renaming the OLT affect existing ONU or service-port configuration?
No. sysname only changes the display name and CLI prompt — it does not touch VLANs, ONT bindings, service ports, or any other configuration.

Will the new name show up immediately in my NMS/EMS?
Usually yes, but some management systems cache the device name and may need a manual refresh or re-sync to pick up the change.

Can I use spaces or special characters in the name?
No — stick to letters, numbers, underscores, and hyphens. Spaces and most special characters aren’t accepted by sysname.

Do I need to reboot the OLT after renaming it?
No reboot is needed. The name changes immediately, and running save just makes sure it persists after a reboot or power loss.
