Adding ONT Huawei SmartAX MA5683T

Adding an ONT on Huawei SmartAX MA5683T

Last updated: September 2026

Applies to: Huawei SmartAX MA5683T (also relevant to MA5600T, MA5608T, and MA5800 series with the same command set). Assumes the OLT is already configured and other ONTs are already online.

TL;DR: Find the new ONT’s serial number with display ont autofind all, register it with ont add, set its native VLAN, then create a matching service-port and save — the ONT won’t have internet until the service-port step is done.

Values in red are examples — replace the board/port numbers, serial number, VLAN, and service-port ID with your own.

Step 1 – Enter Configuration Mode

Connect via Telnet or console, log in, then run:

enable config

Step 2 – Review the Current Configuration

Check which ONT numbers and service ports are already in use, so the new ONT doesn’t collide with an existing entry:

display current-configuration

Step 3 – Find the New ONT’s Serial Number

See which port and board the unregistered ONT is on, and copy its serial number:

display ont autofind all
💡 In PuTTY, select the serial number text and copy it with Ctrl+Ins instead of Ctrl+C, which doesn’t work in most terminal sessions.

Step 4 – Enter the GPON Board’s Interface

Go into the settings menu of the GPON board the ONT is connected to:

interface gpon 0/4

Step 5 – Add the ONT

Register the ONT on this board and port, using its serial number and existing line/service profiles:

ont add 0 5 sn-auth 48575443346C7B32 omci ont-lineprofile-id 10 ont-srvprofile-id 10 desc madankc

Replace desc madankc with your own customer name or address for easy identification later.

Step 6 – Set the Native VLAN on the ONT’s Ethernet Port

ont port native-vlan 0 5 eth 1 vlan 228

Step 7 – Exit the GPON Interface

The ONT is registered, but it won’t have internet yet — it still needs a service-port. Exit the GPON menu first:

quit

Step 8 – Add a Service Port for the New ONT

service-port 287 vlan 228 gpon 0/4/0 ont 5 gemport 1 multi-service user-vlan 228

Step 9 – Save the Configuration

save

Done — the ONT should now be online with working internet.

Step 10 – Check the ONT’s Optical Power

Go back into the GPON board’s interface and check the ONT’s Rx/Tx optical readings:

interface gpon 0/4 display ont optical-info 0 5

FAQ

Why doesn’t the ONT have internet right after I add it?
Registering the ONT and setting its native VLAN only brings it onto the OLT — it still needs a service-port mapping its VLAN to a GEM port before traffic actually passes.
Why does Ctrl+C not work to copy the serial number in PuTTY?
PuTTY treats Ctrl+C as a terminal interrupt signal. Use Ctrl+Ins (or just select the text, which auto-copies in most PuTTY configurations) instead.
Do ont-lineprofile-id and ont-srvprofile-id need to already exist?
Yes. The ont add command references existing profiles by ID — if they haven’t been created yet, the command will fail.
What’s a healthy optical Rx power reading?
Typically between -8dBm and -27dBm. Readings weaker than around -28dBm often correlate with signal issues or frequent disconnections and are worth investigating further.
