TP-Link Wifi Password Change (All Models) Support

⚡ Quick Answer

Open a browser → type 192.168.0.1 or tplinkwifi.net → login with admin/admin → go to Wireless → Wireless Security → change password → Save. On mobile, use the TP-Link Tether app: open app → tap router → More → Wi-Fi Settings → change password → Save.

Is your WiFi suddenly slow? Suspect someone nearby is using your connection without permission? Or maybe you just moved in and want to set your own password? Whatever the reason, changing your TP-Link WiFi password takes less than 2 minutes — and this guide covers every method for every model, including the Archer series, TL-WR series, Deco mesh systems, and range extenders.

⚠️ Signs you should change your WiFi password now: Internet unusually slow at peak hours • Unknown devices in your router’s connected list • You’ve shared the password with people who no longer need access • You’ve never changed it from the default printed on the router label.

What You Need Before Starting

  • Any device with a browser (phone, laptop, tablet) — connected to your TP-Link WiFi or via Ethernet cable
  • Your router’s admin login — usually admin / admin, or check the sticker on the bottom of your router
  • Your router’s IP address — usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (also on the sticker)
📌 Can’t find your router IP? On Windows: open Command Prompt → type ipconfig → look for “Default Gateway”. On Android: Settings → WiFi → tap your network → Advanced → Gateway. On iPhone: Settings → WiFi → tap (i) next to your network → Router.

Choose Your Method

Pick the method that works best for your situation:

Works on: All TP-Link routers | Device: Any browser on phone or PC

This is the most reliable method and works on every TP-Link model regardless of firmware version.

  1. Connect to your TP-Link WiFi Make sure your device (phone or computer) is connected to your TP-Link router’s WiFi network — or plugged in via Ethernet cable. You cannot do this on mobile data.
  2. Open your browser and go to the admin page Type 192.168.0.1 or tplinkwifi.net in the address bar (not the search bar). Press Enter. If one doesn’t work, try 192.168.1.1.
  3. Log in with admin credentials Enter username: admin and password: admin. If you’ve changed the admin password before, use that. If you’ve forgotten it, see the Forgot Password section below.
  4. Navigate to Wireless Settings On the new green/teal interface (Archer series): click Basic → Wireless or Advanced → Wireless → Wireless Settings.
On the old blue interface (TL-WR series): click Wireless → Wireless Security in the left sidebar.
  5. Change your WiFi password Find the field labelled Password, PSK Password, or Wireless Password. Delete the old password and type your new one. If you have both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, change both.
  6. Click Save The router will apply the change — all connected devices will be disconnected briefly. Reconnect each device using the new password.
✅ Done! Your new WiFi password is now active. Every device that was connected will need to re-enter the new password to reconnect.

Works on: Archer series, Deco mesh, newer TP-Link routers | Download: Android or iPhone

The Tether app is the easiest way to manage your TP-Link router from your smartphone — no browser needed.

  1. Download and open the TP-Link Tether app Install it from Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Make sure your phone is connected to your TP-Link WiFi network (not mobile data).
  2. Tap your router under Local Devices The app will automatically detect your router. Tap its icon. If prompted, log in with your admin password (default: admin).
  3. Go to Wi-Fi Settings Tap More (bottom right) → Wi-Fi Settings. On older Tether versions, tap ToolsWireless.
  4. Select the network band to change Tap 2.4 GHz Network or 5 GHz Network (change both for consistency). You’ll see the current SSID and Password fields.
  5. Tap the Password field and enter your new password Type your new WiFi password. Tap Save in the top right corner.
  6. Confirm the change A warning will appear saying you’ll lose connection. Tap Confirm. The app will disconnect and reconnect automatically. Done!
📌 Tether Tip: The Tether app also lets you see all connected devices, set parental controls, run speed tests, and manage guest WiFi — all from your phone.

Works on: TL-WR841N, TL-WR840N, older TL-WR series with blue interface

  1. Open browser → type 192.168.0.1 Press Enter. The TP-Link blue login page appears.
  2. Login with admin / admin Enter username admin and password admin, then click Login.
  3. Click Wireless in the left sidebar Then click Wireless Security from the submenu.
  4. Find PSK Password field Under WPA/WPA2-Personal, you will see the PSK Password field. Clear it and type your new password.
  5. Click Save at the bottom The router applies the new password. Reconnect all your devices with the new password.
📌 Also works via Quick Setup: On the main menu, click Quick Setup → Next until you reach the wireless page. You can change both the WiFi name (SSID) and password there.

💡 How to Also Change Your WiFi Name (SSID)

While you’re in the settings, it’s worth changing your WiFi name too. The default name (like TP-Link_3F21) tells anyone nearby what router brand you have. Use something unique and non-personal.

On the same Wireless Settings page where you changed the password, find the field labelled Network Name (SSID) or Wireless Name. Replace the default name with your own — like “HomeNet_5G” or any name you prefer. Click Save.

⚠️ Avoid using these in your WiFi name: Your full name or house number • Anything that identifies your ISP or router brand • Words like “FBI Surveillance” (overused joke, ignored by real intruders).

🔐 How to Create a Strong WiFi Password

  • At least 12 characters long — longer is stronger
  • Mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols (e.g. Blue#Sky@2026)
  • Use a passphrase — easier to remember, harder to crack (e.g. MyCat-Eats-3Fish!)
  • Never use 12345678, password, your name, or your phone number
  • Don’t reuse the same password you use for other accounts
  • Use WPA3 or WPA2-AES encryption (never WEP — it’s breakable in minutes)
  • Write the new password somewhere safe at home — or store it in a password manager

After Changing Your Password — What to Reconnect

Changing your WiFi password disconnects every device from your network. You’ll need to update the WiFi password on each one. Here’s a quick checklist:

  • 📱 Every smartphone and tablet in your home
  • 💻 Laptops and desktop computers
  • 📺 Smart TVs, streaming sticks (Chromecast, Fire Stick)
  • 🎮 Gaming consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch)
  • 🔊 Smart speakers (Amazon Echo, Google Home)
  • 📷 Security cameras and video doorbells
  • 🖨️ WiFi printers and smart home devices
📌 Tip: After reconnecting your phone, share the new password with family members easily by generating a QR code — on Android, go to WiFi settings → tap your network → Share. On iPhone, simply bring another iPhone close to yours and it auto-shares the password via AirDrop.

Frequently Asked Questions

The default WiFi password for TP-Link routers is printed on the label on the bottom or back of your router. It’s usually a random string of letters and numbers. If you’ve never changed it, that label password is still active. The default admin login for the router settings page is username admin and password admin — but this is different from your WiFi password.
If you can still log into the router admin page (192.168.0.1), go to Wireless → Wireless Security and you can see and change the password there. If you’ve also forgotten the admin login password, the only option is a factory reset: press and hold the Reset button on the back of the router for 10 seconds while powered on. This restores all default settings including the original WiFi password on the label. After reset, set up the router again.
The most common reasons: (1) You’re on mobile data instead of WiFi — switch to WiFi; (2) Your router uses a different IP — try 192.168.1.1 or tplinkwifi.net; (3) You’re typing in the search bar instead of the address bar — make sure it goes in the URL/address bar at the top of the browser; (4) The router needs a restart — unplug for 30 seconds. For more help, see our 192.168.0.1 complete login guide.
Two options: (1) Browser method — connect phone to TP-Link WiFi, open Chrome, type 192.168.0.1 in the address bar, login with admin/admin, go to Wireless → Wireless Security, change password, Save. (2) Tether app — download the TP-Link Tether app, connect to your WiFi, tap your router → More → Wi-Fi Settings → change password → Save. Both work on Android and iPhone.
Yes — changing your WiFi password immediately disconnects every device currently connected to that network. This includes phones, laptops, smart TVs, gaming consoles, smart speakers, security cameras, and any other WiFi-connected device. After saving the new password, you need to go to each device and reconnect to WiFi using the new password. This is normal and expected.
WPA3 is the newest and most secure WiFi encryption standard — available on newer TP-Link Archer models (AX series). WPA2-AES (WPA2-PSK) is the current standard used by most routers and is still very secure for home use. Never use WEP or TKIP — they are outdated and can be cracked easily. If your router supports WPA3, choose it. If not, choose WPA2-AES.
Change your WiFi password immediately if: you suspect unauthorised access, your internet is unusually slow, you’ve shared the password with guests who no longer need access, or you’ve never changed it from the default. For general security, changing every 6–12 months is good practice. Always change immediately after any device is lost or stolen if it had the password saved.
In the router admin panel (browser or Tether app), you’ll see separate sections for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless settings. Change the password in both sections and save each one separately. If your router has Smart Connect enabled (combines both bands under one name), changing one password changes both automatically.
