As you can see, the iPhone 14 Pro looks like a completely different phone, and not just an improved version of the iPhone 14 like previous iPhone pro models. Everything is different this time around, including the design, chipset, and more.

If the iPhone 14 isn’t far behind the iPhone 13, then the iPhone 14 Pro has more significant improvements over its predecessor, the iPhone 13 Pro.

Design differences between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro

The standard iPhone 14 looks pretty much the same as last year’s iPhone 13, including the diagonal camera lens and slimmer notch. The iPhone 14 Plus looks like a larger version of it. If you liked the design of the iPhone 13, the iPhone 14 will suit you perfectly.

The back of the iPhone 14 Pro is where Apple has wasted its time. On the back, the design is similar to the iPhone 13 Pro, although the camera module seems larger thanks to the new 48MP main sensor. (More on that below.) This year’s fun Pro color is a deep purple, a rich magenta fit for royalty.

There is no cutout on the front of the iPhone 14 Pro, replaced by a wide tab-shaped cutout that Apple calls a “dynamic island.” This feature widens the notch to take advantage of the new screen area for alerts and similar notifications. At the presentation, this function looked impressive.

So, the iPhone 14 Pro removed the notch that has existed since the introduction of the iPhone X in 2017. For five years, we had to look at its ugliness, but now the notch has become much more attractive (if we have to look at the notch at all, because phones with an entire screen are still far from perfect).

Display Comparison: iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 14 Pro

The good news is that there are only two screen sizes across the entire iPhone 14 lineup this year-6.1 inches and 6.7 inches. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are the smallest models, while the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Max have larger displays.

All four models feature Apple’s Super Retina XDR technology and use OLED panels. The resolution of the iPhone 14 is 2532 x 1170 (460 ppi), while the iPhone 14 Pro is 2556 x 1179 (460 ppi), so the resolutions are functionally identical. For larger phones, the iPhone 14 Plus is 2778 x 1284 (458 ppi), while the iPhone 14 Pro Max is 2796 x 1290 (460 ppi).

When it comes to brightness, Apple touts both the Pro and standard models as having insanely bright displays. The iPhone 14 has a peak HDR brightness of 1200 nits, while the iPhone 14 Pro has a peak HDR brightness of 2000 nits. This is the highest score we’ve ever seen on a smartphone and is twice as high as the iPhone 13 Pro.

The always-on display feature has finally arrived on the iPhone 14 Pro. This is a low-power mode that allows you to see basic information while your phone’s screen is off. The iPhone 14 won’t be able to take advantage of this feature (which is found on pretty much all Android phones), as Apple relies heavily on the iPhone 14 Pro’s adaptive refresh rate to keep the display on and off without draining the phone’s battery.

Cameras on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro

As always, Apple has updated the cameras on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. The iPhone 14 (and iPhone 14 Plus) has a larger 12MP main sensor with 1.9m pixels, a faster f/1.5 aperture, and 49% better low-light performance. Image stabilization with sensor shift is standard.

The 12MP front-facing camera on all four iPhone 14 models gets a boost with an improved hybrid focusing system, powered in part by a new autofocus feature. This should provide clearer selfies. Apple has also introduced the Photonic Engine in all iPhone 14 models, which uses artificial intelligence to improve low-light photography on all three cameras.

Video recording has also been improved with Action Mode, Apple’s latest technology. While not as impressive at first glance as last year’s addition to Cinematic mode, Action mode will greatly improve video stabilization.

The iPhone 14 Pro has a new 48MP main sensor that is 65% larger than the iPhone 13 Pro sensor. On its own, it can do 2x optical zoom, but paired with a 12MP 3x telephoto lens, you can get 6x optical or 15x digital zoom. That’s impressive, though not nearly as impressive when you consider the Galaxy S22 Ultra with its 100x digital zoom.

The 12MP ultra-wide camera on the iPhone 14 Pro is also better than on the iPhone 13 Pro, letting in three times more light than before. Even the flash has improved. And for professional photographers, the iPhone 14 Pro can capture 48MP RAW images, opening up huge editing potential.

Performance of the iPhone 14 vs. the iPhone 14 Pro

The next difference between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro is the chipset. The iPhone 14 retains last year’s A15 Bionic, although it uses a more advanced version, like the iPhone 13 Pro, with a five-core GPU. By today’s standards, it’s still a powerful chip, surpassing even Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, though not by much.

The iPhone 14 Pro, meanwhile, features a new A16 Bionic with a six-core processor, a five-core GPU, and a 16-core neural engine built on a 4nm process.

This round of updates focuses on the iPhone 14 Pro, from its striking design to upgraded cameras and powerful A16 Bionic chipset. For an extra $200 between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro, you get much faster performance, more powerful telephoto capabilities, a brighter display, and better still photography. The same applies to the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
