TOKYO.- The former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe , died this Friday after being shot while giving a campaign speech , the Japanese press reported.

The incident happened at 11:30 (Japan time) while Abe, 67, was participating in an event in the west of the country, in the city of Nara , according to public broadcaster NHK . The leader gave his exposition from the street in front of the Yamato Saidaiji train station.

“ He was taken (to the hospital) and was in a state of cardiorespiratory arrest on arrival. An attempt was made to revive him. Unfortunately, he passed away at 5:03 p.m. ″, said Hidetada Fukushima, head of emergency medicine at Nara Medical University Hospital.

Shinzo Abe collapsed on the spot and was rushed first by ambulance and then by helicopter to Nara Medical University Hospital in Kashihara city. Officials from the Fire Department indicated that the leader had a cardiopulmonary arrest.

At a press conference,After stating that his predecessor was in critical condition, current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida assured:“This is an unforgivable act.” Shortly after his statement, news of his death broke. As a result of what happened, all political campaign events were suspended .

The attack

According to the Japanese government , the shots are believed to have hit his chest and the right side of his neck . The first information indicated that the politician had been wounded in the chest, but police sources also informed NHK that the shot was fired in his back .

According to the AP agency , the former prime minister came to hold his chest when he collapsed, with his shirt stained with blood. This situation can be visualized in the broadcast images. They also revealed that the leader was able to speak before losing consciousness.

For his part, a reporter pointed out that there were two consecutive explosions . After the attack, the security forces arrested a man . This is Tetsuya Yamagami , 41, who was holding a shotgun in the area.

The incident was witnessed by high school students, who told Japan Times that the attacker approached from behind the crowd and fired two shots. “ The first shot sounded like a toy bazooka and the man backed away afterwards”, indicated a student. After the attacker fired the second shot, a large amount of white smoke appeared, he added.

Campaign

Abe was standing up to deliver a campaign speech ahead of Sunday’s election for the upper house of Parliament . The leader was there to endorse Kei Sato, a lawmaker seeking re-election in Nara.
