Huawei OLT Default Password and Login (MA5683T, MA5608T): Change It Safely
You have a Huawei SmartAX OLT, such as the MA5683T or MA5608T, and you need to log in. This guide gives the default login, shows how to get to the command prompt, and explains how to change the password and add your own admin user.
Huawei OLT Default Username and Password
On a factory-new Huawei OLT the login is:
- Username:
root - Password:
admin
Some newer firmware, from the R017 release onwards, ships with the root password admin123 instead. If admin is rejected on a new unit, try admin123.
If the OLT has already been set up, someone has probably changed the password. Ask whoever configured it, because the default will no longer work.
Change the default as soon as you log in. These defaults are well known, and anyone who can reach the OLT management address can use them.
How to Log In for the First Time
- Connect a console cable from your PC to the OLT console port.
- Open PuTTY, choose Serial, pick the COM port from Device Manager and set the speed to 9600.
- Press Enter. At the prompt, enter the user name and password.
Once a management IP is configured you can use Telnet or SSH instead. The console always works, so use it for first-time setup.
Understand the Command Modes
Huawei OLTs have three levels. The prompt tells you where you are:
MA5608T> enable
MA5608T# config
MA5608T(config)#>is user mode.#is privileged mode, reached withenable.(config)#is configuration mode, reached withconfig. You need it to change passwords and users.
Your prompt shows your OLT’s own name, for example MA5683T.
How to Change the Root Password
In configuration mode, run:
MA5608T(config)# terminal user passwordThe OLT asks for the user name (enter root), then the new password and a confirmation. Use a strong password and write it down somewhere safe.
Then save the configuration so it survives a reboot:
MA5608T(config)# quit
MA5608T# saveHow to Add Your Own Admin User
A better habit is to create your own administrator account instead of sharing root:
MA5608T(config)# terminal user nameThe OLT then asks you questions one by one:
- User name: choose a name that is not obvious.
- Password: enter and confirm a strong password.
- User’s Level: enter
3for Administrator. - Profile name: press Enter to accept the default.
When it finishes, run save. Log in with the new account to test it before you stop using root.
Forgot the Password?
If you cannot log in and nobody has the password, do not guess repeatedly. Check whether another admin account exists on the OLT, or whether your NMS or backup holds the configuration. If neither helps, contact the equipment supplier or Huawei support for the recovery procedure that matches your firmware version. Recovery steps differ between versions, so follow the vendor’s instructions rather than a generic guide.

FAQ
What is the default username and password of a Huawei OLT?
The factory default is root with the password admin. Newer firmware, from R017, can ship with admin123 for the root account.
How do I change the password on a Huawei OLT?
Enter configuration mode with enable and config, run terminal user password, enter the user name and the new password, then run save.
How do I create a new admin user on a Huawei OLT?
In configuration mode run terminal user name, enter a name and password, and choose level 3 for Administrator. Then run save.
Does the same default work on the MA5683T and MA5608T?
Both use the same SmartAX command style and the same factory login. Your exact firmware version decides whether the root password is admin or admin123.
Why does my change disappear after a reboot?
You did not save it. Run save in privileged mode after every change.
Conclusion
Log in with root and admin, try admin123 on newer firmware, then change the password and add your own admin user straight away. Remember to run save.
